Ready to Upgrade your Instrument? – Here is what you need to know

What is a Step-Up Instrument?

Intermediate and Professional level instruments (AKA “Step-Ups”) are considered the next phases of a student’s musical journey.

Most students start on Beginner/Student level instruments, which are often easier to play allowing the student to gain confidence as they learn. These instruments are also made with more durable materials to resist any potential damage.

Step-up instruments are made with higher-quality materials (brass, silver, wood) which allows the player and the instrument to produce warmer and more resonant tones. This is a great steppingstone for students looking to take their sound and skills to the next level.

When is the Player ready for an Intermediate/Professional Instrument?

Most Step-Up recommendations come from school music directors or private teachers if you are not sure reach out to them for guidance. General ideas to keep in mind when considering suitability for a step-up are:

  • How long the student has been playing – students who have a good handle on playing and caring for their instruments are most likely to upgrade to an intermediate or professional model.
  • Level of commitment to band/orchestra/private lessons – students who play in local bands/orchestras, compete, or are pursuing music as a career benefit from a higher quality instrument as it allows them to develop their musicianship.

Benefits of Upgrading

Intermediate and Professional Level instruments are often handmade and can include advanced features such as extra keys, tubing, or alternative fingerings. All these options allow the instrument to be played more easily and with greater control on behalf of the player. This also means that no two instruments are identical and allows the student to find a sound that most benefits them.

  • Craftsmanship & Materials – Higher quality materials used in Intermediate and Professional instruments produces a more refined sound
  • Improved Response – A player’s improved technique paired with the higher quality instrument means the action of the instrument is smoother and therefore more enjoyable to play.

How Much Does a Step-Up Instrument Cost?

The time, labor and materials used in Intermediate and Professional instruments directly impacts the price tag. Once again each instrument is unique and therefore price can also range. While step-up models are more expensive, you can use your current rental equity towards the cost of a professional instrument.
